I don’t want to over-complicate this, but when people talk about the Oakland, CA district of Montclair, they are really talking about six different micro-neighborhoods. It took a couple of years living in Montclair for me to finally figure out what the differences were, but I finally got it, I think. Why does it matter? Well, practically speaking, it doesn’t. Montclair is a wonderful little oasis in the Oakland Hills. It is a true village atmosphere and we all enjoy the centrally located park, a weekly Sunday Farmer’s Market, a storybook library, and fantastic elementary schools. Usually, people don’t even reference which neighborhood in Montclair they live in. So, why bring up the differentiation here?
Well, if you are interested in living in this magical little spot, knowing the differences between the neighborhoods could help you find the right house for you or your client. Each neighborhood has its own feel and character and historically, different real estate prices.
Walkability is what defines this neighborhood. If you are looking to ditch your car for most of your errands, you can still do that here. Most of the homes were built mid-century or before and if you are on the Piedmont Side of Montclair (PSM), meaning west of Highway 13, you could have an amazing, unobstructed view. Overall, price per square foot is a little less than Merriwood and Glen Highlands, unless you are looking at the PSM, then expect to pay more. Children attend Montclair Elementary.
